Indie was a genre of music that started in the US and came to the UK in the 1980's. The term Indie is used to describe the production of Independent music, with most of the labels and songs being self owned. Sonic Youth and Pixies are two artists particually associated with Indie genre.
Indie artists are known for keeping complete control over their music and their careers. They rely on tours and word of mouth as well as the internet for promotion. Many artists have been influenced to come forward and produce their own songs.
However, the term has become blurred over recent years (2000's onwards) due to many artists, with a musical style of 'Indie' signing to major record labels, whilst promoting themselves through more traditional media outlets. Many suggest that the decrease in records sales within recent years has led to the result of the increased popularity of Indie artists due to internet marketing.
