We first looked into how CD covers reflect the sense of mood established in the album. We found that consistently the covers only slightly relate to the general theme of the albums-this is usually because Indie artists avoid themes for individual albums and instead rely on their band style and try to reflect this in their CD inserts.
Another popular way of constructing a CD cover is to use a screen shot from the first music video released alongside the album. In our case that would mean indefinitely using our playmobil characters but after talking about this a majority decision was made that this would be too obvious and would seem like the playmobil characters would have to be included in the theme of the album and wouldn't fit the genre as well as other things.
After looking through tons of CD covers for Indie bands we noticed one running theme: images were being used that didn't relate to the album or the band but still encouraged a mise en scene developed with the band or albums.
An example of comparisons:
Coldplay's Viva La Vida album cover screamed revolution and freedom from repression, throwing off old rulers and making a new world which Coldplay played on for the entire album. this is a classic example of the album cover reflecting the music within.
But compared to the Indie band Those dancing days who's debut album called 'in our little space hero suits' featured absolutely no connection to any theme apart from the playful and simple nature that the band has about them.
