Applying Andrew Goodwin's Theory:
Within Indie genre music videos, the common genre conventions tend to include a narrative as well as a performance from the band. However, as the genre is becoming more widespread this is constantly changing, with elements from mainstream videos, influencing those of the Indie genre. For example, a typical indie music video would be Blur's Coffee & TV, which includes a narrative as well as a performance. However, Indie videos try to include something that is 'new' and 'fresh' and which could be claimed as original and memorable. The use of the character in Blur's video enables the video to be their most memorable video throughout their discography. However, many songs that would be classed as indie include music video that follow mainstream conventions with characteristics such as dance routines.
Here you can see how our music video follows the genre characteristcs that are included within a Indie based music video:
Between the relationship of the visuals and the lyrics, in this case, we chose not to include and illustrative images that would link back to the literal representation. Within our draft we did include one scene where the lyrics did represent an image however, after changing the draft video, due to the narrative mainly including the actions of the two plastic characters, making the video illustrative just wouldn't work without having the use of human emotion, where illustrative representation to the lyrics could be easily applied. However, we have kept to the meaning of the song loosely with the narrative including a male and female character, of which we can stream the meaning of the song through.
The visual style of the music video includes many various shots of the band performing as well as the constant theme of the autumn weather. The narrative love story and adventure that the two characters embark on is also a recurring motif throughout the video.
The original idea for the narrative stemmed from the film Toy Story, which became a heavy influence over our product. Also included was the narrative of Blur's Coffee & TV which is mixed with the idea of using the reference to Toy Story, where we could include a love story. By following along the line of Toy Story, we were able to create our own narrative, whilst knowing that the audience would respond positively to our idea, knowing how well loved the Toy Story franchise is.
