At the very first brainstorming session we had as a group we decided immediately on the Indie genre of music. I could say this was because we understand Indie music to have fantastic videos or that the music is easy to work with but we put personal preference first and decided we all like Indie music the most. We did however explore other genres briefly to aviod being cavalier but these were mainly Indie related like rock, soft rock, folk, acoustic, electronic. This may seem single minded but we understood the task in hand and believed that to do our best the music should be something we love listening to.
Specifically, we love indie music for how creative it is and how it would let us explore our own creativity and types of filming we haven't tried before. The fact that Indie music may be different also interested us because it meant we could produce a music video that wouldn't necessarily make sence but within the confinds of the Indie genre it would. If we were to choose any other genre we would find ourselves following a set layout for instance mainstream pop uses dance routines and rock uses mainly performance. We desired a mix of narrative and performance and found a 'happy medium' with Indie.
On second look, choosing a genre purely based on personal preference is actually a strong move because of our experience with Indie music we already had a wealth of knowledge on good songs for music videos and know how best to suit the theme of an Indie song. This also meant we could see the perspective of the song writer and understand the meaning of the song beyond first appearence, this ultimately meant we could fit a narrative to the song easily.
